“Horse,” the latest exhibit by noted photographer Jill Greenberg, will open with a reception on Thursday, October 18th at ClampArt in Chelsea. Inspired by Greenberg’s childhood love for painting, drawing and photographing horses, the exhibition unpacks the connotations of the many ways in which horses are restrained and controlled—with bridles, reigns, and bits—and explores them as a metaphor for the oppression of women in a sexist society. Greenberg also explores the fluid and often ambiguous nature of sexuality and gender, juxtaposing soft, feminine pastel colors with the animals’ strongly masculine musculature.

Though her celebrity portraits and ad work are ubiquitous—she’s shot everyone from Gwen Stefani to Mark Zuckerberg, as well as ad campaigns for Burger King and Showtime’s Dexter–Greenberg is perhaps best known for her fine art photography; her work has appeared in The New Yorker and the Washington Post, among other publications. Her studied and conceptual approach, along with her famed use of “digital painting” postproduction techniques that allow her to create dramatic, unexpected color experiences, set Greenberg apart as one of the leaders in the fine art photography world.

The opening coincides with a monograph of the exhibition, which will be released this week by Rizzoli and will retail for $55.
